Ailadinium reticulatum gen. et sp. nov. (Dinophyceae), a New Thecate, Marine, Sand-Dwelling Dinoflagellate from the Northern Red Sea ArchiMer
Saburova, Maria; Chomerat, Nicolas.
A new photosynthetic, sand-dwelling marine dinoflagellate, Ailadinium reticulatum gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Jordanian coast in the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea, based on detailed morphological and molecular data. A. reticulatum is a large (53–61 μm long and 38–48 μm wide), dorsoventrally compressed species, with the epitheca smaller than the hypotheca. The theca of this new species is thick and peculiarly ornamented with round to polygonal depressions forming a foveate-reticulate thecal surface structure. The Kofoidian thecal tabulation is APC (Po, cp), 4′, 2a, 6′′, 6c, 4s, 6′′′, 1p, 1′′′′ or alternatively it can be interpreted as APC, 4′, 2a, 6′′, 6c, 4s, 6′′′, 2′′′′. The plate pattern of A. reticulatum is noticeably different from...

Cabra reticulata sp. nov. (Dinophyceae), a new sand-dwelling dinoflagellate from the Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Chomerat, Nicolas; Nezan, Elisabeth.
A new sand-dwelling dinoflagellate species, Cabra reticulata sp. nov., is described from sandy habitats in the south of Brittany (northwestern France). This new species possesses the characteristics of the 'unusual' genus, Cabra Murray et Patterson. The thecal plate formula is Po Pt 3' 1a 4'' 'x' 3c ?s 5''' 1'''' (or alternatively interpreted as Po Pt 4' 0a 4'' 'x' 3c ?s 5''' 1''''). Because of the strong lateral compression, cells of C. reticulata are frequently seen laterally and have a polygonal shape, with three prominent antapical pointed flanges and a dorsal spine in the anterior part of the hypotheca. The cingulum is ascending and incomplete. The thecal surface is ornamented with strong reticulations forming polygonal areolae, which differs from C....

Fragilidium duplocampanaeforme sp nov (Dinophyceae): A new phagotrophic dinoflagellate from the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer
Nezan, Elisabeth; Chomerat, Nicolas.
A new species of the genus Fragilidium, F. duplocampanaeforme sp. nov., is described from examinations by LM and SEM. This species has been recorded in summer on the French Atlantic coast, over a number of years. It was never abundant in the plankton and was very often associated with Fragilidium subglobosum, Pyrophacus horologium and also with toxigenic species of the genera Alexandrium and Dinophysis. Phagotrophy of F. duplocampanaeforme on Dinophysis prey is shown, and sexual reproduction is suggested by the observation of gamete-like small forms. The size and the peculiar shape of its cells do not correspond to any known taxon, but the plate arrangement fits the genus Fragilidium. The plate formula is Po, Pc, 4', 8 '', 10c, 6s?, 7"', 2 '''', lp. A...

Isolation of 12 microsatellite markers following a pyrosequencing procedure and cross-priming in two invasive cryptic species, Alexandrium catenella (group IV) and A. tamarense (group III) (Dinophyceae) ArchiMer
Laporte, Martin; Shao, Zhaojun; Berrebi, Patrick; Laabir, Mohamed; Abadie, Eric; Faivre, Nicolas; Rieuvilleneuve, Fabien; Masseret, Estelle.
Alexandrium catenella (group IV) and Alexandrium tamarense (group III) (Dinophyceae) are two cryptic invasive phytoplankton species belonging to the A. tamarense species complex. Their worldwide spread is favored by the human activities, transportation and climate change. In order to describe their diversity in the Mediterranean Sea and understand their settlements and maintenances in this area, new microsatellite markers were developed based on Thau lagoon (France) samples of A. catenella and A. tamarense strains. In this study twelve new microsatellite markers are proposed. Five of these microsatellite markers show amplifications on A. tamarense and ten on A. catenella. Three of these 12 microsatellite markers allowed amplifications on both cryptic...

Paralytic shellfish poison outbreaks in the Penze estuary: Environmental factors affecting toxin uptake in the oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Baron, Regis; Garen, Pierre; Truquet, Philippe; Masselin, Pierre; Bardouil, Michele; Leguay, Didier; Amzil, Zouher.
Several experiments using a self-regulated system were conducted to define the factors likely to influence the uptake of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) by oysters in the Penze estuary (France, Brittany). Each 4-day experiment was carried out in a recirculated sea water system using 15 Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) separated from each other and supplied with unfiltered natural seawater containing alternatively toxic (Alexandrium minutum) or non-toxic (Skeletonema costatum) algal diets. The food supply and exposure times to toxic diets were determined according to field studies of the Upstream and downstream movement of patches containing A. minutum. The experimental parameters corresponded roughly to the hydrological conditions generally observed in...

Taxonomic characterization of a brackish water, bloom-forming Peridiniopsis species (Peridiniales, Dinophyceae) from Iraq ArchiMer
Hameed, Hameed A.; Saburova, Maria; Chomérat, Nicolas.
Background The occurrence of a small brackish water bloom-forming dinoflagellate belonging to the genus Peridiniopsis is reported for the first time from the Shatt Al-Arab River in Iraq. Based on the study of cell morphology, this taxon was attributed to the recently described Peridiniopsis minima, recorded so far only from the Jiulongjiang River, China. Results The description of P. minima was extended to include some previously unreported details of the thecal surface, apical pore complex, and sulcus structure using light and scanning electron microscopy. Cells of this species from Iraq were oval to rhombic in shape and slightly dorso-ventrally compressed, with distinct red eyespot and endosymbiont nucleus. Cells were covered by a thin theca with the...

The formation of the twin resting cysts in the dinoflagellate Dissodinium pseudolunula, a parasite of copepod eggs ArchiMer
Gomez, Fernando; Artigas, Luis Felipe.
The dinoflagellate Dissodinium pseudolunula is the most common and widespread ecto-parasite of copepod eggs in neritic waters. When the host is absent, the species survives with a distinctive pair of twin resting cysts described as Pyrocystis margalefii. Based on live samples, the formation of the twin resting cysts is illustrated here for the first time. The gymnodinioid infective cells did not form overwintering cysts under unfavourable conditions. These are formed inside the secondary lunate sporangium.
